The City of Cookeville announces changes to street parking on North Cedar Avenue beginning Tuesday, May 28.
As part of Phase II of the North Cedar Avenue Streetscape project, the 17 on-street parking spaces between West 2nd Street and West Broad Street on North Cedar Avenue will be permanently removed. This change will allow for the creation of designated bicycle pathways along the street.
“The North Cedar Streetscape project was designed to be the City’s first truly multimodal street, having separate facilities for vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians,” says James Mills, Cookeville’s city manager. “It was intended to connect the TTU campus with the city’s Central Business District.”
All parking on this stretch of North Cedar Avenue will be redirected to the three nearby public lots already installed by the City. The lots account for 89 new parking spaces for the area.
According to Mills, “Two more parking lots in the downtown area, containing approximately 110 spaces, will be constructed by the City in the very near future.”
On May 28, contractors will begin milling and resurfacing the asphalt. Work is expected to last two to three weeks. Temporary lane shifts, traffic control, and occasional closures will be in effect.
Contractors will also use this time to mill and resurface the nearby alleyway that sits behind businesses on West Broad Street and adjacent to the railroad. This alley will be intermittently closed to vehicles during the timeframe outlined above.
