COOKEVILLE – A fun Halloween tradition just got competitive.

Carving Up Cookeville, a new pumpkin carving contest presented by Cookeville Leisure Services, is open for registration.

“This contest is a great way for everyone, adults and children, to show their creative side through carving a pumpkin,” Sally Herren, Leisure Services recreation programmer, said. “So much has been cancelled in 2020 already, so we are excited to offer this activity.” 

Carving Up Cookeville features three categories: Scariest, Most Creative and Funniest. Age groups are adults (18 and up) and children (17 and under).

Registration is open through Oct. 26; the entry fee is $5 per pumpkin. Entries can be dropped beginning National Pumpkin Day, Oct. 26, through Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road. Then the judging will begin.

“We will be looking at how detailed the pumpkins are,” Herren said. “It will be nice to see people go all out with their pumpkin carving skills.”

First place winners will receive fall-themed prize baskets. 

Afterward, photos of all entries will be posted on the Cookeville Leisure Services Department Facebook page for a virtual contest starting Oct. 29. The pumpkin with the most likes by Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. will receive the People’s Choice award.

Pumpkins must be appropriate for public display and no larger than 18 inches in diameter. Participants should not write their name on their entry. For more information, call 931-526-7393.
