COOKEVILLE – It’s not too late to join the class – dance class, that is.

The Leisure Services School of Dance begins its 2021-22 season Aug. 2 at Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 CC Camp Road. An open house will be held the same day from 4-6:30 p.m., giving prospective students an opportunity to meet the instructors, see the dance studio and register.

“Our instructors are highly qualified, caring and focused,” Chad McDonald, Leisure Services cultural arts superintendent, said. “They want all dancers to advance each year, improving technique, strengthening confidence and perfecting performance style.”

Classes range from beginner to advanced, ages 3 to adult, in the classic disciplines of ballet, jazz and modern dance.

McDonald noted that students are held to a high standard – and that includes the younger dancers.

“Dance instruction is available beginning at age 3 with Dance for Young Children,” he said. “Beginning in second grade, dancers may choose to begin ballet and modern. Jazz is available for dancers in fifth grade and above. More advanced classes such as pointe are by placement or approval of instructors.”

What do students gain from the experience?

“They’ll receive instruction in technique, vocabulary and physical fitness as it relates to dance and performance,” McDonald said.

The Leisure Services School of Dance, now in its 23rd year, was created to provide quality dance education in the community. It follows the Putnam County School System calendar, taking the same fall, winter and spring breaks.

Multiple dancers in the same household qualify for a discount. Payment plans are available.

Dance season concludes in May with recitals at Cookeville Performing Arts Center.
