Boost your mood with February fitness classes

COOKEVILLE – Not every day is sunshine and rainbows – especially during winter.

For some people, the shorter days and longer nights can contribute to a less active lifestyle and glum outlook.

Jen Webb, Cookeville Leisure Services special programs coordinator, said exercise can help solve that problem. She recommends getting involved in group fitness classes at the Cane Creek Recreation Center, 180 C C Camp Road, where 36 classes per week are being offered in February.

“We can’t force the sun to shine, but we can take charge and make ourselves get regular exercise,” she said.

Webb pointed out that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 14 percent of people in the U.S. experience seasonal depression. However, research shows that many can manage or avoid the condition with 30 to 60 minutes of exercise and 20 minutes of exposure to sunlight each day.

“This is great information about beating those cloudy day blues with exercise,” Webb said.

Fitness classes are $3 each, and the first one is free. Participants may drop in – no membership fees or contracts required. Fit Cards may be purchased for $30 (11 visits for the price of 10).

  • 9:30 a.m. – PiYo
  • 11 a.m. – STAC (strength training and conditioning)
  • 4:15 p.m. – Cardio Hoop and Sculpt
  • 5:30 p.m. – Step & Strength  
  • 5:30 p.m. – Vinyasa Yoga
  • 6:30 p.m. – Dance2Fit           

Tuesday

  • 8:15 a.m. – Spin 30
  • 9 a.m. – Mixed Yoga Flow
  • 9:30 a.m. – Zumba
  • 11 a.m. – Fit 4 Life    
  • 4:30 p.m. – Bar Strength
  • 5:30 p.m. – Cardio Core
  • 6:30 p.m. – Dance2Fit           

Wednesday

  • 8:15 a.m. – Zumba
  • 9:30 a.m. – Yoga Flow
  • 11 a.m. – STAC
  • 5 p.m. – Hustle & Muscle
  • 6 p.m. – Bend
  • 6:30 p.m. – Zumba     

Thursday

  • 8:15 a.m. – Zumba
  • 9:30 a.m. – Step & Strength
