Winterizing Your Home to Prevent Water Line Freeze Damage

  1. Close all foundation vents.
  2. Disconnect garden hoses from outside water faucets.
  3. Protect freeze-prone faucets with insulating covers.
  4. Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines.
  5. Know where your main water shut-off valve is located in case of a line break.
  6. Protect exposed pipes with insulation.
  7. Keep the lid to the water meter closed tightly.
  8. Open cabinet doors to expose pipes to warmer room temperatures.
  9. If you have pipes vulnerable to freezing, allow a small trickle of water to run to keep the pipes from freezing.  The cost of the extra water is low compared to the cost to repair a broken pipe.
  10. Set thermostat to at least 55° Fahrenheit when you leave your house.
  11. Drain lawn irrigation system of all water including backflow device.
  12. Remove, drain, or protect exterior pumps on pools, saunas, and fountains.
