You may view our property tax history and information at the Tennessee Trustee website.

CITY PROPERTY TAX is payable from October 3rd through the last day of February.  For the year 2017 the property tax rate for the City of Cookeville is $0.84 per $100 of assessed value.  A property tax calculator is available to estimate the property tax due for any appraised value.  Please call our office at (931) 520-5250 or (931) 520-5251 for the exact amount of tax due.

Tennessee state law does not require the mailing of tax notices. Owners of property are presumed to know that taxes are due without personal notice. Failure to receive a tax notice does not relieve the responsibility of payment, nor is this a reason for interest and penalty charges to be dismissed if the tax bill becomes delinquent. Also, Cookeville City Charter Article V, Section 5.11 states: Failure to send such bills shall in no way affect the validity of a tax, and all taxes shall be due and payable and subject to the same penalties and interest regardless of whether tax bills are sent to taxpayers or not.

As required by state law, penalty and interest begins March 1st at the rate of 1.5% per month.  A schedule for monthly penalty and interest rate is available, or call our office (931) 520-5250 or (931) 520-5251 for the amount due.  Maximum penalty and interest is 19.5% to the City of Cookeville, after this time the taxes are filed at the Putnam County Clerk and Master’s Office for collection.  To avoid court costs, attorney fees and additional penalty and interest, it is in your best interest to pay the taxes at the City of Cookeville before they are filed with the Putnam County Clerk and Master’s Office.  The Putnam County Clerk and Master Office is located in the Justice Center 421 E Spring Street Cookeville (931) 526-6282.

As a reminder, if you pay City of Cookeville property tax you will also pay a Putnam County property tax to the Putnam County Trustee’s Office 300 E Spring Street (old Courthouse on the square) Cookeville (931) 526-8845.

PROPERTY TAX ASSESSMENTS are made by the Putnam County Assessor’s Office.  The tax notices are generated after applying the City of Cookeville tax rate to the county’s assessment value.  If you have any questions about the appraisal of your property or if you need to change the mailing address for your tax notices, please contact the Putnam County Assessor’s Office located at 300 E Spring Street (old Courthouse on the square) Cookeville or phone (931) 528-8428.

TAX RELIEF is available for low-income homeowners age 65 and over, certain disabled homeowners, veterans who are disabled or widows of veterans.  If you feel you qualify for this relief, please contact our office at (931) 520-5250, (931) 520-5251 or the Putnam County Trustee at (931) 526-8845.  Applications for property tax relief must be completed prior to the delinquency date of taxes for your application to be submitted to the State of Tennessee.  For the tax year 2016, the homeowner(s) income from all sources cannot exceed $29,180 per year.  An application must be completed at either the City of Cookeville Property Tax Department or the Putnam County Trustee’s Office.  The property taxes must be paid in full the first year and when the application is approved by the State of Tennessee, a refund for the tax relief amount is mailed to the homeowner.  When the following year taxes are due, after the income, ownership and residency is verified and if you are still within the State of Tennessee guidelines, your taxes will be discounted upon payment.
